when is it ok to start giving your baby apple juice?

February 8th, 2010 | by admin |

My son will be four months old on the eigth. he’s been sick and my mother in law gave him some apple juice the other day while she was babysitting him. i got kind of upset about it because i don’t know if his stomach can digest apple juice yet because he’s so young.
she also gave him raspberry tea.
i’m just wondering if i was right when i got mad and said he was too young to handle that stuff.
anyone know for sure?

How is it that almost every single mother in laws are morons? Just dont leave your baby alone with her again. I wouldnt even leave the room for a minute with my fiancee’s mom, she keeps saying "give the baby some food!" (she’s 16 weeks old!)

yes he is definitely too young!! he should only have formula or breastmilk. and rice cereal at 4 mos. no other foods till 6 mos. baby juice , any kind is fine after 6 mos. itwas right to get upset as a mom, but if she only gave him a sip i’m sure he is fine! it be a problem if she fed him a whole bottle!

no they shouldn’t have anything other than formula at that age, so yes you were right for getting upset about it.
How is it all these MIL’s are idiots??? My mother was awesome with my newborn, and I still go to her for advice and my daughter is now 3 lol

He’s not too young for a sip, but really juice should wait till 6 months. My doctor told me not to give it to my 7 month old yet as it’s just added sugar he doesn’t need. When you do give it, it should be half water and half juice. I don’t think it can hurt though just once…

Actually pediatricians recommend that juice be given sparingly to all children so there really never is an age that you should start giving juice as a regular item.

I’m sure your son will be fine but I definitely wouldn’t want anyone to give him any more juice or tea. He should only be eating breast milk (or formula if you must) at this age.

We must have the same mother in law, mine does the same kind of stuff and I can’t stand it. You had every right to be upset, when people watch your children they should respect what your wishes are. At that age they do not need juice or tea. They are even saying that older children should have juice limited because of the sugar. Also, tea has caffeine which a four month certainly doesn’t need. Another thing is that at that age they need to get their nutrition from breast milk or formula and when they fill up on other stuff that is leaving less room for the important stuff.

I’d be pissed off. My mother in law would do the exact same thing as the old school has different beliefs. Anyhow, in Canada it is advised you wait until your baby is minimum 6 months old to give apple juice and in saying that, they say it is not necessary. If you do give it, limit it to 2-4 oz a day. And, no herbal teas until your kid is minimum FOUR YEARS old. So tell your mother in law that you are the mother and that you don’t appreciate what she did.

I’d be mad too. I gave my son about a tablespoon of juice in a 4 oz bottle of water when he was 5 months old and constipated. He’s 2 1/2 years old now and I still water his juice down. I would say around 5 mos you can give them some juice but water it down alot.
