Was wine considered to be the same as grape juice in Jesus’ time?
February 8th, 2010 | by admin |I was told that wine was considered grape juice a long time ago. Is that true?
Yes, and It still is in my house. Isn’t it in yours?

Very close to it. The alcohol content in the wine back then was very light in comparison to today’s alcoholic beverages. I’d guess from the way it’s been explained to me that it would be like drinking the 2% beer that they give to our servicemen. They would pretty much have to sit around and drink all day long to get a buzz.

No it was not. There is a Bibleverse "Do not get drunk on wine…Be filled with the Holy Spirit”. Eph 5:18."..that can not be considered Grape Juice.
There is another in Galatians.

The biggest issue then was there was not way to gauge the alcohol content, plus the Romans introduced the amphora a Greek invention for storing and transportation of the wine, but they lined the vessels with lead to keep the wine cool.
As for alcohol, like bread in those days, the yeast was a wild yeast captured in the air and generally just mashed bread was used to ferment the grape juice or "Must", the ancient romans used it as a drink and as a sweetener, but boiling the wine or juice down to a syrup.
The thing was a the one repondant who used the biblical quote, wine is like Soda or Pop to us today, and with a lack of clean water, it was the drink of choice.
