Was wine considered to be the same as grape juice in Jesus’ time?

Monday, February 8th, 2010

I was told that wine was considered grape juice a long time ago. Is that true?

Yes, and It still is in my house. Isn’t it in yours?

How do you turn apple juice into sparkling cider?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

I really like sparkling apple cider, but it’s kinda expensive (you know the stuff that comes in the bottles). I was wondering if you could get practically the same stuff by carbonating apple juice. That way it would be cheaper and i wouldnt just be paying for the bottle. Anyone know a way to do that? And is it the same as cider?

Didn’t Jesus do that in the bible?

If grape juice was all people drank in biblical times then why are there warnings against drunkenness?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Some Baptists I know say Jesus didn’t drink wine but grape juice. I have several issues with this that are mainly to do with how grapes immediately being the process of fermentation due to the yeast on the skin BUT… what they will also point out passages in the bible stating one is not to become drunk, but that doesn’t make sense. We are also not to be gluttons, so should we avoid eating as to not become gluttonous? It’s all about moderation.

Well, John, I guess you’ve heard people process the Bible where all the Christians were drinking Kool-Aid, but they just didn’t have that stuff then.

Jesus talked about swelling and bursting wine skins, and that is describing the fermentation process.

Be aware of this fact, drunkenness is condemned very strongly; in fact, it says no drunkard will inherit the kingdom of God.

One more thing, when grapes were in season, fresh grape juice was available, and a description is found in the Bible:

Genesis 40:11 "And Pharaoh’s cup [was] in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand."

The King got the best, and I prefer fresh grape juice, too.
